Online Therapy- What is it?
This refers to therapy sessions that are done online using video chat services/platforms. Many of us currently use a variety of video chat services (Skype, Facetime, Zoom) to keep in touch with friends and family who live in different locations to us. Psychology services (assessment and therapy) can also be conducted using similar platforms. This means that people can still access help when they are unable to get into the same office for a variety of reasons. This is a huge benefit in current times of the COVID-19 Pandemic when we cannot meet in my office.
What online platform do I use?
I have started using a platform called doxy.me (https://doxy.me/) which has been designed specifically for health professionals, with internet security and confidentiality in mind. It is simple, free, and easy to use on any device. All data is encrypted, the sessions are anonymous, and none of your information is stored. We adhere to HIPAA, PIPEDA, and GDPR data privacy requirements.
On the website there are some great video’s that tell you about the platform and how to use it the first time. I am also happy to use a different platform if you prefer.
How does doxy.me work?
You will need access to a computer or laptop or similar (e.g. phone, tablet); a good internet connection; and a webcam or camera attached to this device.
When it’s nearly time for our appointment, click the link that I will have emailed to you.
You do not need to complete any special sign-up process or pay any fees for this platform. You will just need to enter your name (your first name is fine), and click “check in”. You will also need to click “enable camera”.
This will take you to my specific virtual waiting room, and I will be able to see you’re waiting when I log on.
When I click on your name, the video call starts. From there, we are able to have our appointment in the same way you would via Skype and other platforms you’re familiar with.
